Memories
Duane (Doo-ane) Bukoski

I've known Earl only a short time (since he moved back to Koloa, Kauai, in 2004), but the time I spent having fun with him, he taught me something I'll never forget. "Never Give Up!"  and "Do What Makes You Happy." He lived his life the way he wanted, the way that made him happy. I remember (toward the end) days he didn't feel good, but he never let anyone know he was in pain. He always had high spirits. I only hope I can be that strong when I need to be.

There is a light in this world, a healing spirit
more powerful than any darkness we may encounter.
We sometime lose sight of this force
when there is suffering, and too much pain.
Then suddenly, the spirit will emerge
through the lives of ordinary people who hear a call and answer in extraordinary ways.

To tell our story is a way of affirming the life of the one we have lost—the experiences we had together, the favorite family stories. Talking story is also a way of moving our grief along, and so contributes to our own healing. But it is also a gift to others—to tell not only the story of the life that has passed, but our own story in relation to this event—how we got through it.

Sharing stories has helped me to reinforce the fact that just because a life is over, it doesn't mean that the life can't continue to enrich and bless the living.

Thank you all for your patient ears and kind and comforting words, it has helped our family tremendously throughout this year. In honor and memory of our father, please join in and share some of your special memories. Mahalo!
